Wrath of the Lich King smashes GameStop sales records

Just when you think the sales of World of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King couldn’t get more impressive… well, they do. This isn’t a game as much as it’s a juggernaut of money-making power; WoW is the sort of franchise that other companies dream about, and is probably the only thing that can justify the evil mind of Bobby Kotick. A leaked memo from GameStop details some of the records the game broke at the gaming retailer.

Let’s go down the list:

  • The week of the game’s launch was the biggest sales week of the year
  • It was also the biggest week ever… outside of last year’s Christmas sales
  • The game was the biggest launch in GameStop history
  • The game posted the highest presale numbers ever
  • It had the single largest single-format week one sales, taking only two days to do it
  • Lich King had the biggest day-one sales of any game ever in the history of forever

Activision Blizzard isn’t a company that seems to want to leave any possible dollar behind, so it will be a very surprising thing if we don’t start seeing many more expansions coming down the line in the near future. This is a huge success in retail sales, but it also has the added effect of bringing gamers back into the fold and paying their $15 a month.

Does anyone remember EverQuest? It’s easy to be king and then lose it all; this should be more of a warning than a hint that Activision Blizzard needs to shower the world with more content. Slow and steady wins the race… and allows you to enjoy this level of sales.
