World of Warcraft: A guide to private servers

World of Warcraft has 8 million players worldwide. However, this is only counting those who play on the Blizzard public servers. World of Warcraft holds host to an endless number of ‘private servers’, servers run to provide free gameplay of what is fast becoming the most popular game of all-time.

First of all, finding private servers. I personally got referred to the Dank server, than to the Salvation server. However, you may not always have friends on a private server. So, you gotta find one. But don’t worry – there are a number of websites listing hundreds and thousands of private servers all over the world. No matter where you are, you can join these. Websites like http://www.gamesites200.com/wo wprivate/, http://www.xtremetop100.com/ and http://www.gtop100.com/ have extensive lists of all these private servers, ready for you to join and play on. All you gotta do is find one you would have more fun on.

To get on the private servers needs a little file tweaking. If you’re already on the same patch as the server in question (most are on The Burning Crusade now anyway), it’s easy. All you gotta do is edit one file, and it takes about 10 seconds. When you sign up to a private server via their website, you should be given a server address. The usage of this is fairly simple. Find your WoW directory (example, C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft) and find the file ‘realmlist.wtf’. Open this in Notepad and you should see ‘set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com’. That web address you see is what the game connects to and tries to log on to when you enter a username and password. Simply change the address to your desired server. For example, mine is ‘set realmlist salvationwow.no-ip.info’. This means when I log in, I connect to Salvation WoW. Simple!

There are basically 2 types of private server you will find. BlizzLike, and Funservers. BlizzLikes are exactly what it says on the tin, exact copies of the Blizzard servers. Everything on these servers is the same as the Blizzard ones. Drop chance, professions, experience, everything is perfectly coded to mimic the Blizzard servers. But with one difference. Except for donations (which are generally optional or grant extra items), these servers are FREE! Yes, you can straight away join one of these servers and start playing!

The other type of servers, Funservers, are for more casual players. Players who wanna get right into instancing and high-level questing and exploring the Outlands within less than a week. I personally
