Someone explain how this works?
There are many ways to talk with your fellow players on WoW. Most popular are Teamspeak, Ventrilo, and WoW’s in-game VOIP, “Voice Chat.”
Some people do use the Teamspeak/Ventrilo route. These are separate programs that do not have anything to do with WoW. They can be used in or out of WoW, or while doing anything else on your computer. You would need to download Teamspeak or Ventrilo, and have a server available (meaning that you or your pals would need to rent one). Even though it costs additional money to use Teamspeak or Ventrilo servers, many guilds and players choose to do so because it has a superior sound and voice quality.
World of Warcraft has its own Voice over IP function, which can be found by going into the main menu while you’re in WoW (hit escape) and choosing “Sound/Voice.” There is a voice tab in the Sound/Voice menu, and you should tab over to it. You would need to check the “enable voice chat” box, and, if you want to do a “push to talk,” meaning you would press a button to toggle on/off the broadcast of your microphone, you will need to assign a push-to-talk hotkey.
You may use WoW’s VOIP in private channels. These may be party channels, raid channels, or channels that you create for you and your friends. You can choose whether or not to use Voice chat in a channel by browsing over to your Channel Tab (subset of the Social tab, hotkey “O”). You would need to join a channel, and then enable Voice Chat through your Social>Channel tab.
Remember, you don’t have to use voice chat, but if you decide to use WoW’s chat while you are in a party or channel with your friends and other players, all players in your party or channel will be privvy to your conversation.
Best of Luck, and have fun with it!
