Singapore Halloween costume ideas

As Halloween draws closer, many of us scamper around the city looking for costumes to wear and people to scare. Mummy wraps? That’s so 1000 B.C. Zombies? Michael Jackson beat you to that. Get in touch with your dark side as we show you what to wear for Halloween, Singapore style.

VR Man

Why party as Spiderman when you can dress as Singapore’s first — and hopefully last — superhero? VR Man was an enigma back in the day. Who was this guy who thwarted the evil forces of pirated DVD sellers and chewing gum smugglers? Did he have a secret lair? Is he even cool?

Yes, he was as exciting as a loaf of bread, but at least his outfit didn’t have nipples. We’re looking at you, Joel Schumacher.

Parking warden

They’re clad in white and they instill a sense of fear in the common people. Singapore’s very own Stormtroopers never miss their targets, dishing out the scariest thing for motorists — parking summons. Because these stealth ninjas lurk in the shadows, you never know what hit you until it’s too late.

Watch as the crowd around you scurry to their cars, their blood cold from the fear of the impending doom waiting at the car park.

Steven Lim

This notorious video blogger can be seen at Orchard Road soliciting (read: terrorizing) passersby for an eyebrow plucking session. A self-proclaimed ‘triple threat’ — eyebrow plucker, sexy party stripper, baby sitter with ‘enrichment activities’ — there is nothing scarier than a man who strips into his trademark yellow briefs while taking care of your child.

It also shows that you can be scary AND sexy, but only if you have no self-awareness.

ERP gantry

Like the Death Star, the ERP gantry is a symbol of foreboding dread. This traffic control mechanism has caught many a driver unawares of its presence until it is too late — driving through it without placing a Cashcard in the car’s IU. Sure, you’re not going to be the toast of the party, but if it’s pure motoring misery you’re going for, then the ERP gantry gets the vote.

We’re not sure how someone can dress up like a gantry, but gray PVC pipes, LED lights and plenty of ingenuity come to mind.

Ris Low

Halloween isn’t just about fancy outfits. It’s also about how you can look ‘Boomz.’ Throw on some leopard prints and zebra stripes with a contrasting green khaki in tribute to Ms. Low’s favorite savannah, South Africa.

If someone asks if you’re from the Thundercats, you can now proudly say, “No, I’m a beauty queen.” Now that’s class. Or crass.

Chinese Vampire (‘Jiang shi’)

If you thought the movie ‘Twilight’ was cool, say hello to the Chinese answer to Edward Cullen. Equally pale and possibly better looking than his American counterpart, the Chinese Vampire (Jiang Shi) is a well-known fable in Chinese folklore.

Tape pieces of yellow paper to your forehead, don a Tang dynasty robe and try jumping instead of walking as often as you can — Jiang Shi makes an excellent scary costume, and makes you a potential chick magnet.
